Saju Compatibility: How to Check If You're a Match

In Korea, before some couples get married, their families still quietly ask a Saju reader one question: "Are their charts compatible?" It's called Saju compatibility (gunghap), and you don't need Korean heritage or a professional reader to check it — you can do it yourself, for free, in a few minutes.

What Saju compatibility actually looks at

  • Generating relationships — some elements naturally feed and strengthen each other (Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth/ash, and so on). Charts with generating elements tend to read as harmonious, supportive pairings.
  • Controlling relationships — other elements naturally restrain each other (Water controls Fire, Metal controls Wood). These pairings aren't automatically "bad" — they often read as pairs who challenge and sharpen each other, for better or worse.
  • Matching or clashing Day Masters — your Day Pillar's stem is considered the core of "who you are" in Saju. Comparing two people's Day Masters is often the centerpiece of a compatibility reading.

How to check yours

  1. Run your own birth details through the free Saju calculator and note your Day Master element.
  2. Have the other person do the same.
  3. Compare which elements you both carry, and whether they generate or control each other.

What a "bad" result actually means

This is the part people get wrong most often: a clashing or controlling relationship in Saju compatibility is not a prediction of breakup or misery. Traditionally, it's read more like a heads-up about where friction might show up — communication style, pace, how you each handle conflict — so you know what to watch for, not something to panic about. Plenty of long, happy relationships have "difficult" charts on paper. The chart describes a dynamic, not a destiny.

Why people still do it

Even outside serious matchmaking, checking Saju compatibility with a partner, friend, or family member is a genuinely fun way to talk about your relationship — it gives you specific, structured things to discuss ("okay but does your chart also run hot-tempered?") instead of vague small talk. It's less "fortune telling" and more a conversation starter with some centuries-old structure behind it.
