2027 Year of the Goat (Sheep): Korean Zodiac Forecast for All 12 Animals

Start with a feeling, not a verdict

Every January, many of us scan a zodiac list for our own animal and brace a little. That tiny flinch is worth noticing. It tells you the reading matters to you, and that is a good place to start. This guide treats 2027, the year of the Fire Goat (also called the Fire Sheep), as a kind of weather report: it describes the mood of the year, and you still choose what to wear. Each "card" below is one short entry for one animal: a feeling, what the tradition may say about it, and one small step you can take this month.

Which animal are you in a saju year?

In saju, the animal changes at Ipchun, the "start of spring" solar term, which falls on February 4, 2027 (Korea time). If you were born on February 4 itself, your birth hour decides which side of Ipchun you fall on. Seollal, the Lunar New Year, arrives on February 7. (Chinese New Year is February 6 in China.) Everyday Korean talk often counts the animal from Seollal, so if your birthday is in January or falls between February 4 and 6, check which year your saju uses before you read your card. The birth years below are the most recent ones for each animal, counted from Ipchun.

Basis: Saju counts the year from Ipchun; 2027 Ipchun is February 4 and Seollal is February 7 (Korea).

How the Goat year meets each animal

First, the year itself: its stem is yin Fire, the lamp or small flame, and its branch, the Goat, is dry, warm earth. That pairing is why we call 2027 the Fire Goat year. Two ideas then shape the cards. One: the Goat sits in a ring of twelve animals, and traditional readings note which animals sit close to it in friendly ways (Horse, Rabbit, Pig, Snake) and which sit in more tense spots (Ox, Dog, Rat). "Tense" here means two different paces meeting, not a warning. The other: 2027's fire feeds some animals' elements and softens others. A softened element is not a lost one; it only asks for a different approach.

Basis: Standard branch relations for the Goat: six-harmony with Horse; three-harmony with Rabbit and Pig; summer group with Snake and Horse; clash and three-way "punishment" with Ox and Dog; "harm" with Rat.

A folk note on samjae

You may hear about samjae, the "three hardships," from a relative this year. It is a folk saying, not part of saju theory: people born in the years of the Pig, Rabbit and Goat are said to pass through a three-year stretch, which this time runs from 2025 to 2027, and 2027 is its last year. Many people read that last year as the one that closes the stretch, so treat it as a folk saying and not as a forecast.

The 12 animals

Rat — 1996, 2008, 2020

You may notice small misunderstandings feel louder this year, and that can be tiring. Traditional readings place Rat and Goat in a "harm" pairing, which is best read as two styles rubbing slightly, never as bad luck. Your Water also dims the year's fire, so you may feel calmer than the room around you. This month, say the one sentence you usually skip, such as "Here's what I meant."

Ox — 1997, 2009, 2021

You may feel pulled between keeping your routine and answering the year's warmer, looser pace. Tradition calls Ox and Goat a "clash," a word that sounds bigger than it is: it describes opposite directions on the ring, which often shows up as a different sense of timing. Your steady Earth is fed by the year's fire, so you have fuel. This month, change one habit by ten minutes and see what happens.

Tiger — 1998, 2010, 2022

You might feel restless to start something, then wonder whether the timing is right. In the standard lists, Tiger and Goat sit in different groups, so this year reads as open ground. Your Wood feeds the year's fire, which can feel like giving a lot of energy away. This month, start the thing in its smallest form, a single page or a ten-minute trial, before you commit.

Rabbit — 1999, 2011, 2023

You might feel drawn to people and plans that feel soft and sincere. In the old lists, Rabbit shares a three-animal circle with Goat and Pig, which is usually read as natural ease. Separately, folk tradition counts 2027 as the last year of samjae for Rabbits, a folk saying rather than saju theory. Your Wood feeds the fire, so warmth may be easy to give. This month, pick one invitation you usually let slide and say yes to it.

Dragon — 2000, 2012, 2024

You may feel big ideas pressing for room while the calendar feels full. Dragon doesn't appear in any of the Goat's traditional pairings, so no particular theme is set for you. Your Earth is fed by the year's fire, which can feel like extra steadiness behind you. This month, pick one idea and give it a first small deadline, then let the others wait their turn.

Snake — 2001, 2013, 2025

You may feel at home in this year's warm, quiet pace. The Snake, Horse and Goat form a "summer group" in traditional readings, which suggests shared seasonal energy. Fire meets fire for you, so the year can feel familiar rather than new. This month, notice one place where you could slow down on purpose, and let a decision sit overnight.

Horse — 2002, 2014, 2026

You may feel the year is on your side, and then worry about using it well. Horse and Goat are the closest pair on the ring, called a "six-harmony" match, often read as mutual support. Fire meets fire again, so energy can run high. This month, finish one thing you started before you start something new.

Goat — 2003, 2015, 2027 (this year)

Your own year can feel like standing in a spotlight you didn't ask for. In some traditional readings, a year that matches your animal is a time to look at yourself more honestly, rather than good or bad news. Folk tradition also counts 2027 as the last year of samjae for Goat, a folk saying rather than saju theory. Your dry Earth is fed by the fire around you. This month, write down one quality you hope shows more by year's end, and one burden you'd like to put down.

Monkey — 2004, 2016

You may feel the urge to fix things quickly, and then notice others aren't ready. Monkey isn't part of the Goat's traditional pairings either, so your year is mostly written by other things. The year's fire softens your Metal a little, so your usual sharpness can feel gentler, which can be a useful change of pace. This month, ask one question before offering a solution.

Rooster — 2005, 2017

You may feel your standards tested by a year that is a bit less tidy than you'd like. The standard lists link Rooster to neither the friendly nor the tense Goat pairings, so the year stays neutral. The year's fire softens your Metal, which can loosen the grip on "perfect." This month, hand in one piece of work at "good enough" and notice that the world carries on.

Dog — 2006, 2018

You may feel loyal to old ways while the year nudges you toward something new. Tradition lists Dog with Ox and Goat in a three-way "punishment" group, a heavy name for a simple idea: three animals that sometimes expect different things from each other. Your Earth is fed by the year's fire, so you have support. This month, tell one person plainly what you expect from them.

Pig — 2007, 2019

You might feel generous and a little overextended at once. Pig shares a three-animal circle with Rabbit and Goat, usually read as natural ease. Separately, folk tradition counts 2027 as the last year of samjae for Pigs, a folk saying rather than saju theory. Your Water dims the year's fire, which can feel like a cooling hand on a busy day. This month, pick one favor you will not do, and say so kindly.

A closing question

Reading all twelve, you may have noticed that no animal got a promise. That's on purpose. The Goat year sets a mood, and your day-to-day choices fill in the rest. If you could ask 2027 for one thing, what would it be? Curious about your own saju animal? Try our free Saju Calculator.
